From a sustainability perspective, 2024 was a year marked by preparations for PKV’s transition to climate neutrality. “If we can produce economically viable CO2-free products from waste paper, we will have achieved the perfect ecological cycle for packaging! This goal is worth striving for, even though it poses major economic challenges,” says PKV shareholder Kristian Evers.

In order to replace natural gas as an energy source and thus reduce climate-damaging CO2 emissions as much as possible (decarbonization), PKV will, as reported, rely on a mix of different energy sources and efficiency measures. Green electricity will make up a large part of the future energy mix. Large industrial heat pumps could make a significant contribution to energy savings.

In addition, PKV intends to use energy from waste. Every day, waste that cannot be processed into paper or cardboard arrives at the plant via waste paper. Even today, this waste is carefully sorted, processed into fuel, and burned elsewhere to generate energy. PKV can and must use this energy itself in the future.

The company published more details on all its decarbonization plans at the beginning of 2025. Year after year, the current status will also be summarized in subsequent sustainability reports.

In addition, PKV reports in its new sustainability report on developments in its cooperation with suppliers, such as the introduction of a new supplier code of conduct and corresponding audits. Various technical projects focusing on energy efficiency are also covered in the report for 2024, such as the commissioning of a new water heat recovery system with energy savings equivalent to the annual consumption of hundreds of households.

PKV’s efforts are being rewarded: in the globally recognized EcoVadis rating for sustainability performance, PKV has been awarded a gold medal for its activities and progress over the past year (for 2024) – a recognition given to the top five percent of all companies assessed.
